RealSAM awarded contract to design the next book reader
Washington DC, USA – 14 NOV 2019 RealSAM has been awarded contract of up to £1.5M by the Library of Congress in the USA to develop the next generation of audio book readers based in AI for people who are blind or have low vision.
The Library of Congress division, The National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled, provides audio books for over 400,000 Americans through its existing technology of cartridge based players, and millions more via its smartphone app. This system, however, is slow and expensive to run, and the technology is reaching the end of its life. This is the same problem that RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) addressed two years ago when it helped RealSAM develop their voice operated book reader, which is branded locally as “In Your Pocket”. RNIB sends out audio books from its collection of over 100,000 every month to the 2M or so people in the UK living with sight loss.
RealSAM has an Artificial Intelligence solution that makes their android phones completely voice operated.
From the consumer’s point of view, it’s as easy as just saying “Find me books about James Bond” to get a list of books you can then select and stream to your phone, with an interactive dialogue.
The unique RealSAM solution is currently available in the UK as “In Your Pocket”, where the device also acts as a voice operated phone and digital assistant helping improve the quality of life of those living with low vision or blindness (www.inyourpocket.net).
